Globe, Arizona (October 2020)

So the last time I went out of town was a day trip to Globe, Arizona in October 2020. The drive from the Phoenix area was awfully hilly/traumatizing for my old-ish, underpowered car. Trying to get “Baymax” (named for its many airbags) to do anything near the speed limit was difficult to impossible. And then there’s an old, long tunnel to get to town….! I was frankly relieved to make it to town alive.

Ah, driving is not my strong suit.

First up was the Besh Ba Gowah Archaeological Park. It’s an interesting little place with (I believe) largely restored ruins. Unfortunately, the indoor museum was closed, but the ruins were open and interesting to see.

The soda machine also had Doc Holiday soda, which happens to taste almost exactly like Dr Pepper. (Though apparently more sensitive people think it tastes like the amazing soda Cheerwine…!)

Then I walked through much of downtown Globe. On a weekday afternoon, it felt very much like a ghost town.

I’m always fascinated by old buildings. Most new buildings keep ornamentation to a minimum, so any sort of architectural details really appeal to me.

And imagine the photos a good photographer could have taken! Apparently I missed quite a few historic buildings, too. Wikipedia shows so many!

I’d love to visit again to get a better look at the town. Might need to drive someone else’s car, though!
