I have a short story featured in The Accidental Time Travelers Collective, Volume 1!

“Turtle Day, or Kate Malone and the Magic Calzone” is a madcap story about a time-traveling calzone. It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever written. The anthology is general market (meaning some stories are only for adults). My story is largely suitable for all ages, but it contains some themes of self-harm.

I thought May 23 was going to be another ordinary day at Create Your Own Pizza, a.k.a. CYO-P. The kind of day where you build, like, a hundred pizzas, you get a cool six dollars in tips, and when you finally get home and take your shoes off, you somehow find half an olive inside.

May 23 was different.

So around 11:00 a.m., a horde of turtles showed up. And not the cute green reptiles with shells and scaly skin. Those would have been easy to feed. Put them on the patio with some salad mix and some anchovies. Done.

No. This crowd was all humans—humans with shell backpacks, puke-green landyards, or mushroom-brown T-shirts that said “TORTOISE-CON” and “Turtle Day.” A few people made the unique fashion statement of wearing all of the above.

Some of my fellow “pizza masters” forced smiles for the mob, and I swear Greg sounded as chipper as a Disney princess when he greeted the first turtle. I groaned.

But CYO-P is happy to take anyone’s money without regard to race, religion, orientation, clothing, reptile status, etc. So, we all got to work slinging dough.
