The New York Sun’s Reports of Titanic on April 16, 1912 and beyond

One day after the Titanic sank and the news is out in the New York Sun, with articles on at least the first five pages.

On page 5 was a rather lovely outline of the ship, though.

And the next day’s headline was even more grim:

HOPE ABANDONED FOR ALL BUT ABOUT 800 OF THE LOST TITANIC’S THOUSANDS

Makes me long for the days of the many little articles on the front page with their diverse headlines.

The issue on the 18th is back to the prior format but still has nothing but Titanic stories at the top of every column.

The 19th has another giant and grim headline and again only Titanic stories at the top:

ICEBERG TORE INTO THE TITANIC’S SIDE–CARPATHIA LANDS 705 RESCUED, 1,475 DEAD

The stories at the top of the 20th’s likewise are all Titanic stories.

It was finally the Sunday paper on April 21 that had stories other than the Titanic at the top of the front page. Headlines included “HUNDREDS LOST IN RIVER FLOOD” and “CARUSO SUES A GIRL FOR MORAL DAMAGES.”
